This large-scale open-air museum on a beautiful hillside of one million square meters preserves and exhibits buildings from the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Opened in 1965, 67 historical buildings from the Meiji period, including 11 nationally important cultural properties, have been relocated and restored.
In this village, visitors can not only tour the buildings, but also actually ride on an SL train and a Kyoto tram.
In addition, there is a church where you can hold a wedding ceremony and a restaurant where you can enjoy beef hot pot. Various guided tours are also available.
Meiji-mura is also famous as a filming location for TV and movies. It is also recommended to dress up in Meiji-era style costumes and taste the gourmet food of the Meiji period.
The most popular building in Museum Meiji-Mura is the “Imperial Hotel Central Entrance,” completed in 1923 and designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, with beautiful Oya stone, geometric carvings, and openwork terra cotta. The restoration took about 17 years.
Another popular attraction is a riddle-solving attraction that takes advantage of the expansive site. Purchase a participation kit and collect clues and hints hidden throughout the village to solve the riddles.
See, wear, eat, experience, and fully enjoy the charms of the Meiji era.
The site is vast, so we recommend prioritizing what you want to see and visit. It takes 3.5 hours just to see the important cultural properties, about 3 hours if you want to focus on Western architecture, and about 2 hours if you want to visit buildings associated with Soseki Natsume and other great figures of the Meiji era.
Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Meiji era for an enjoyable experience.
